A motorcyclist hit a woman who was walking in the northbound lanes of the 110 Freeway in Wilmington Tuesday afternoon, May 5, killing both, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 1:20 p.m., said Lance Nieves, a California Highway Patrol officer and spokesman, who added it was unclear why the woman was on the freeway.
The motorcyclist, a 67-year-old San Pedro man, was just south of Pacific Coast Highway when he noticed the pedestrian and attempted to swerve out of the way to avoid hitting her, Nieves said.
The pedestrian, a 27-year-old woman whose last known address was in Hawthorne, was walking westbound from the right shoulder of the northbound lanes and was struck between the far left lane and the second lane from the left, Nieves said.
Investigators remained on scene to investigate the crash. The CHP anticipated lanes to be shut down for about two hours, with traffic diverted onto Pacific Coast Highway.
